It is said to dispel feelings of unworthiness, that can hold one back from achieving their full potential. Mahogany Obsidian is said to be a very grounding stone, and very healing. Obsidian typically forms near the end of a volcanic cycle and is often associated with domes of volcanic rock, such as the hills of Glass Buttes, Oregon. Mahogany Obsidian cabochons have a hardness of 5 to 5.5. Obsidian was named after a Roman- Obsius, who is said to have discovered it. ![]() The red coloration in Mahogany Obsidian is likely the result of trapped hematite. The lava cools so quickly that no crystals can form. Fire obsidian - iridescent obsidian from Glass Buttes, Oregon 'fire' is said to be due to reflection of light off thin layers the refractive indices of which are higher than the rest of the obsidian because of their containing extremely small (nanometric) magnetite crystals (Rossman and Miller, 2007). Obsidian is produced when lava cools very quickly. The black obsidian adds stability to the opal and provides a dark background color that contrasts with the opals fire. This glassy, lustrous gemstone is found in lava flows.
